Yesterday we went to the neighborhood that many of the girls came from. The dump they used to pick from is in the background but now they live on the outskirts of it in small homes made by Spain for them. A recycling plant was placed in the dump but the workers there are mostly women. The men still don’t have jobs and actually are still working through the garbage in some areas of the dump and garbage left in their neighborhoods. See pictures below. In the homes they cover the windows with lose boards or heavy drapes because that’s what they were used to in the dump. On top of that drinking and running the street is still rampant. Its a sad story.
Unfortunately the girls still go back to this area during some weekends which can be unsettling for them. Not only do they leave the structure of the Villa but they are subjected to thoughts and situations from their family that may go against their teaching.
Fortunately Pastor Ricardo who works in the Villa has tried to bridge the gap between the life of the Villa and the families. He continues to work with them alongside our training to help them live right and turn to God. See the story of a praying grandmother who takes care of one of the girls at the villa when she goes home above.
